Event Description

Hello All,

There will be a re-enactment of the Civil War "Battle of the Crater" this Saturday, July 31 at the Petersburg National Battlefield (entrance on E. Washington Street near Fort Lee. Check out the forwarded message for details. There will be musket firing, canon firing, and ladies (in costume) exhibits.

A great photographic opportunity. This will not be a formal Camera Club photo shoot. Simply attend if you can. John would like to see some of the photos to show to the Camera Club group at our next meeting.

On Saturday July 31, 2010 the famous Civil War Battle of the Crater will be remembered at Petersburg National Battlefield. Ranger talks and living history programs will occur at Eastern Front Tour Stop #8 and the Eastern Front Visitor Center throughout the weekend. Visitors will be able to hear the amazing story of those involved in one of the Civil War’s most vicious battles, and explore women’s contribution here at Petersburg and to the war effort in general.
Throughout the day civilian reenactors from the 12th Virginia Infantry, Company B will be presenting - "How Civilians and Soldiers Survived the Siege of Petersburg" (11:00 am & 1:30 pm) and "Female Spies of the Confederacy and Women of the South" (12:30 pm & 3:00 pm), and giving related demonstrations on quilting, sewing and crocheting at the Eastern Front visitor center.
At Tour Stop #8 there will be infantry and artillery drills (10:00 am, 1:00pm & 4:00 pm) and living historians and park rangers conducting special Battle of the Crater tours (11:30 am & 2:30 pm) that cover the building of the mine, the role United States Colored Troops, and the counterattack of Confederate General William Mahone’s men.
July 30, 2010 marks the 146th anniversary of the Battle of the Crater, also known as the “horrid pit”. Come see why this battle has inspired historical documentaries on the History Channel and is featured in the book and film “Cold Mountain”.
